Fee Structure

Many cases, such as relative adoptions with parental consent, most agency finalizations, international re-adoptions and adult adoptions are usually taken and completed on a flat rate attorney’s fee basis. The flat rate varies as to type of case, number of children, location, birth parent situation, etc., but most are in the $1000 – $3500 range. Because there are many variables in all but the most simple cases, a meeting with Ms. Coppock is necessary to determine the best approach and a good estimate of expected fees. These appointments are billed hourly.  Ms. Coppock’s hourly rate is $300.  Free consultations are not customary in adoption.   Those are common in injury and disability law.

Cases that are contested or more complex in nature are handled hourly. Many contested cases never go to trial, the contesting parent either ultimately agrees or does not show up.  In fact, strategies for avoiding expensive litigation is always part of initial discussion.  But when a trial is necessary, the cost of this litigation is usually upwards of $30,000.

If retained at the meeting, the cost of the meeting can be deducted from the retainer or flat rate paid.

*  Court Costs and miscellaneous fees not included.

For adoption finalizations of special needs children through the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services, Ms. Coppock accepts the fee paid by the State.  For more information about DCS adoption, see http://dawncoppock.com/information-for-prospective-adoptive-parents-in-dcs-cases/
